Scout's Gut Call Led Chiefs to 3-Time Champion Chris Jones

Ten years ago, a scout named Ryne Nutt stood his ground in a room full of football executives who disagreed with him. The debate that night would change the Kansas City Chiefs forever.

Most people in the draft room wanted Robert Nkemdiche, a defensive tackle from Ole Miss. Nutt had watched every snap of tape and believed Chris Jones from Mississippi State was the better choice, despite concerns about the young player's consistency.

"I watched all of their tape," Nutt told the room full of future NFL general managers and Hall of Fame coach Andy Reid. "This is the better player."

The Chiefs traded back, collected extra picks, and selected Jones with the 37th pick the next day. The Cardinals took Nkemdiche at 29th, and he played just 38 games in five years.

Why This Inspires

Jones rewarded Nutt's faith beyond anyone's expectations. In ten seasons, he's become a three-time Super Bowl champion, seven-time Pro Bowler, and six-time All-Pro selection.

More than statistics, Jones represents the power of believing in people's potential when others see only flaws. Nutt saw immaturity and inconsistency in Jones' college tape but also glimpsed something special in his final six games.

Jones needed just three more sacks to become second in Chiefs history behind Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas. He's never recorded fewer than five in a season, turning those "flashes" Nutt spotted into sustained excellence.

"I'm grateful, man—I'm so grateful—just to be in the Chiefs organization," Jones said. "I didn't think I had a chance of going to Kansas City."

That 2016 trade also positioned Kansas City to make an even bigger move the following year: selecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes. One scout's conviction in a draft room started a dynasty.
