Seagull Halts Soccer Games After Nesting on Dutch Pitch

When VV Haagse Hout discovered a seagull had built a nest right next to their goalpost last week, the amateur football club faced an opponent they couldn't simply play around.

The determined bird had chosen the main pitch to lay two eggs, and Dutch law meant the nest couldn't be moved. Secretary Jan van Cuijk admitted the feathered surprise "throws the whole schedule into chaos."

Red and white tape now marks off the goal area like a VIP section for the club's most unusual visitor. Saturday's first team match got bumped to the artificial pitch, which meant canceling a veterans' game entirely.

Even a school sports class planning javelin practice had to relocate to the opposite end of the field. The seagull's territorial instincts have essentially made her the club's new groundskeeper.

Bird sanctuary experts told Omroep West they'd never seen a seagull nest on a football pitch before. These coastal birds typically choose rooftops or beaches, making this mama's choice both baffling and bold.

The players and staff could have resented the disruption. Instead, they've embraced their role as temporary protectors, working around practice schedules and match fixtures to give two unhatched chicks a fighting chance.

In about a month, those eggs will hatch, the baby gulls will eventually fly away, and football will return to normal. But for now, VV Haagse Hout has become famous for something more touching than any goal they could have scored.
