Sean McCann to Represent Scotland at Commonwealth Games

Sean McCann will dive into the Tollcross Swimming Centre pool Saturday morning, fulfilling a dream that started when he watched the 2014 Commonwealth Games as a nine-year-old boy in those same Glasgow stands.

The 21-year-old long-distance freestyle specialist from Loughborough University will represent Scotland in the 400m, 800m, and 1500m events. He qualifies through his father Gerry's Scottish heritage, despite growing up in England.

"It's the pinnacle really of representing Scotland at the Commonwealth Games, especially at a home Games," McCann told Loughborough University this week. "I've got lots of family up in Glasgow so that makes it even more special."

McCann balances his swimming career with studying chemical engineering at university. This year alone, he finished third in the 800m freestyle and fourth in the 1500m at the British Championships.

His journey to this moment began years ago when he joined the Scottish Swimming programme as a teenager. In 2023, he represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, placing fifth in the 400m freestyle and seventh in the 1500m.

He also competed at the 2024 Championships that served as Team GB's Olympic trials and raced for Great Britain at the 2025 European Open Water Championships in Croatia.

McCann's approach to his debut shows remarkable maturity. "I'm going in as more of an underdog," he said. "I don't feel like there's any pressure on me. I should be able to go in and perform at my best."

That mindset reflects years of dedication to both academics and athletics. Juggling a demanding engineering degree while training for international competition takes extraordinary discipline and time management.

His progression from watching the Games as a wide-eyed child to competing for his heritage country demonstrates how childhood dreams can become reality with patience and hard work.

Saturday morning's 400m heats will mark the beginning of what could be a breakthrough performance for the young swimmer, surrounded by family who've supported his journey every stroke of the way.
