Seattle Lake Hides Nearly 100 Shipwrecks in 'Ghost Town
A robotics expert is mapping nearly 100 sunken vessels in Seattle's Lake Union, revealing a hidden underwater museum of maritime history right beneath a bustling city center. Most of these shipwrecks have never been explored by divers.
Beneath the boats and kayaks gliding across Seattle's Lake Union lies an entire ghost town of shipwrecks, and one expert is finally bringing them into the light.
Phil Parisi, an underwater robotics specialist, is documenting nearly 100 submerged targets in the urban lake that sits right in the heart of Seattle. About half of these sites are believed to be shipwrecks from the lake's century-long history as a working waterway for shipbuilding and vessel traffic.
What makes this discovery especially exciting is that many of these wrecks have never been visually confirmed. While sonar surveys mapped their locations years ago, the actual condition and identity of most vessels remain a mystery.
Parisi uses remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) equipped with cameras and sonar to explore the murky depths. The lake's pollution makes traditional scuba diving risky, so the robots do the dangerous work instead.
"We need to document what these wrecks look like today," Parisi told local news. Beyond about 25 feet deep, the lake becomes eerily quiet with almost no plant or marine life.

While roughly 40 sites have already been documented, dozens more await exploration. The challenge isn't just finding them but accessing them, as many wrecks sit tucked beneath private docks where marina owners are reluctant to grant access.
When Parisi's team does reach a wreck, identifying details often prove elusive. Years of rust, biological growth, and environmental wear have stripped away registration stickers and painted hull names.
Why This Inspires
Parisi's work reminds us that adventure and discovery don't require exotic destinations. Seattle residents pass over this underwater museum daily, completely unaware of the maritime history resting just feet below the surface.
"Every place holds incredible landmarks and hidden treasures, yet we're often distracted by the humdrum of life," Parisi said. He encourages Americans to get curious about their own backyards.
The project builds on earlier surveys but fills crucial gaps in understanding what's actually down there. For a lake that's surprisingly shallow compared to other Puget Sound waters, Lake Union holds an outsized collection of sunken stories.
Parisi hopes his documentation will inspire others to explore local history, proving that the most fascinating discoveries can happen right where we live.
