Seattle Sets Dim Sum World Record with 830 Dumpling Fans
Seattle just grabbed the world record for largest dim sum party, with 830 people sharing handmade dumplings in the city's historic Chinatown-International District. The delicious victory beat Australia's previous record and brought thousands together for a neighborhood ready to celebrate again.
On Thursday afternoon, 830 people sat four rows deep along blocked-off streets in Seattle's Chinatown-International District and ate their way into the history books.
Together, they devoured more than 3,000 handmade pork-and-shrimp dumplings and buns, snatching the Guinness World Record for largest dim sum party from Sydney, Australia. Sydney had held the title since 2019 with 764 participants.
At 3:30 p.m., Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empric took the mic and made it official. Seattle was now the world champion of dumpling parties.
The record attempt kicked off the neighborhood's summer block party, bringing an estimated 900 people to one of Seattle's oldest business districts. Jade Garden Restaurant provided all the dumplings, with owner Eric Chan and his father leading the chef team in making 3,600 dumplings entirely by hand.
"I'm happy with this turnout," Chan said. "And I'm especially happy we got the record since my father and the chef team made the dumplings by hand."

Each participant received a takeout carton with four dumplings and buns. Some treated it like a speed-eating contest, channeling their inner Joey Chestnut by swallowing dumplings whole and cramming steamed buns into their mouths.
The Ripple Effect
The record attempt was more than just fun and food. It brought much-needed energy and foot traffic back to the Chinatown-International District, where many dim sum parlors and noodle houses have struggled since the pandemic.
The timing was strategic too. Organizers moved the traditional late-summer block party earlier this year to coincide with the FIFA Men's World Cup matches at Seattle Stadium, hoping to capture tourist attention.
The celebration continued into Thursday night with street food vendors and dancing, turning the record attempt into a full neighborhood party. For one afternoon, the district buzzed with the kind of energy it's been working to rebuild.
Seattle's new title arrives with perfect timing, just a day before the United States and Australia face off in the World Cup. Now the city has something extra to celebrate beyond soccer.
