Security Guard Hits 50 Years, Zero Sick Days at Senior Home

When Tom McKievick answered a newspaper ad in 1976 for a security position at Fredericka Manor in Chula Vista, California, he never imagined staying more than a few months. Fifty years later, he's still there, and he hasn't called in sick once.

McKievick serves as head of security at the senior living community, clocking in an estimated 12,650 times if he took just one week of vacation each year. His dedication isn't about chasing a record, though. He genuinely loves what he does.

"When I started I wouldn't think in a million years I'd still be here but I enjoy the residents and the work," McKievick told Fox 5 San Diego. He describes his role as challenging yet entertaining, never boring.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines a "lifetime career" as working for the same employer for decades. McKievick has achieved that rare milestone in an era when the average American changes jobs every four years.
