Mind Blown

Shanghai's stunning new opera house welcomes everyone, ticket or not, with a gravity-defying spiral staircase connecting the waterfront to a rooftop stage. The 1.6 million square foot cultural landmark proves world-class performance venues can belong to everyone.

Shanghai just opened a massive opera house that treats culture as a public right, not a privilege.

The Shanghai Grand Opera House welcomed its first visitors this week after a decade of construction. The nearly 1.6 million square foot building sits along the Huangpu River and houses three separate auditoriums with 4,200 combined seats.

But here's what makes it special. You don't need a ticket to explore the building. No performance required. No admission fee. Just walk in.

Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta designed the space with radical openness in mind. The building's signature feature is a massive spiral staircase that rises from Shanghai's riverfront walkways and curves upward to form the roof itself. Anyone can climb it to reach an open-air observation deck, gathering spaces, and an outdoor stage.

"Buildings like opera houses inevitably create thresholds through walls, doors and ticketed programs," says Kjetil Thorsen, Snøhetta's co-founder. "We see it as our responsibility to challenge those thresholds."

The staircase alone functions as public art. Its design echoes a traditional Chinese fan, a dance movement, piano keys, and the flowing Huangpu River below.

Inside, the main performance space called Harmony Hall seats 2,000 people with state-of-the-art acoustics and dark red furnishings. The 1,200-seat Soar Theatre handles baroque and classical opera. The flexible Open Stage offers riverfront views and adaptable configurations for experimental performances.

The inaugural season runs through February 2027 with 82 performances. Expect Russia's Eifman Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Germany's Staatskapelle Berlin orchestra, and traditional Chinese operas including The Peony Pavilion.

The Ripple Effect

Shanghai is transforming itself into a cultural capital. Since 2021, the city of 25 million has opened the Museum of Art Pudong, Shanghai Museum East, West Bund Grand Theatre, and Shanghai Literature Museum. Each project signals that art and culture belong in daily life, not locked behind velvet ropes.

Snøhetta has made accessible opera houses their signature. Their Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo opened in 2008 with similar public-first design. Opera houses in Busan, South Korea and Diriyah, Saudi Arabia are following the same blueprint, opening in 2027 and 2028.

The Shanghai Grand Opera House proves that world-class cultural institutions can serve two purposes at once: showcasing extraordinary performances while functioning as everyday public spaces where anyone feels welcome to walk through the doors.
