Shanghai Tourism Surges With 9.36M Visitors in 2025

Shanghai just staged one of the year's most impressive tourism comebacks, proving that wanderlust is alive and thriving across the globe.

The Chinese metropolis welcomed 9.36 million international visitors in 2025, a remarkable 39.58 percent increase from the previous year. Even more encouraging, travelers stayed longer. Overnight visitors jumped 45.09 percent to 8.79 million people, showing that guests weren't just passing through but settling in to explore.

South Korea led the charge with arrivals more than doubling to 909,100 visitors, a 103 percent surge that made it Shanghai's strongest performing market. Russian travelers weren't far behind, with arrivals climbing 59 percent to reach 385,100 visitors.

Southeast Asia showed serious enthusiasm too. Thai arrivals jumped 70 percent, while Indonesian visitors increased 62 percent, reflecting growing regional connections and easier travel between neighbors.

European interest returned strong, with Italian visitors up 52 percent. Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia each posted growth exceeding 30 percent, creating a balanced mix of source markets that reduces dependence on any single region.

The numbers gained momentum as the year progressed. December alone brought 1.08 million international travelers, a 45.56 percent spike that capped off twelve months of steady growth.

The Ripple Effect

Shanghai's tourism agencies responded to rising demand by nearly doubling their operations. They organized 180,500 inbound trips in 2025, a 97 percent increase that required hiring multilingual staff, upgrading digital booking systems, and creating curated itineraries for diverse international audiences.

Hotels felt the positive impact immediately. Star-rated properties averaged nearly 66 percent occupancy for the year, up two percentage points from 2024. Boutique hotels overlooking landmarks like the Bund became especially popular with South Korean and European guests seeking premium experiences.

The city invested in enhanced tourism infrastructure and visa facilitation measures that made visiting easier. Stronger air connectivity opened new direct routes, while improved hospitality training helped international guests feel more welcome.

Travel agencies served 274,900 international visitors throughout the year, up 55 percent. This growth reflects not just more tourists but more sophisticated tourism, with visitors seeking authentic cultural experiences alongside Shanghai's modern attractions.
