A once-shy education major transformed her college experience by stepping out of her comfort zone, leading fundraisers that raised thousands for local schools. Mackenzie Cowan's journey from solitary student to campus leader earned her UM-Flint's prestigious Maize and Blue Distinguished Scholar award.

Mackenzie Cowan spent her first two years at the University of Michigan-Flint doing what she'd always done best: earning perfect grades and keeping to herself. But a solo trip to a campus block party during her junior year changed everything.

The elementary education senior had dreamed of becoming a teacher since first grade, drawn to helping others learn. Yet despite her academic success, something felt incomplete.

"My 'aha' moment was realizing I needed a little bit more than just academic success," Cowan said. "Good grades alone won't make me happy or take me far. I need connections, friendships and experiences."

That realization led her to attend a Greek life event alone, where she discovered Phi Sigma Sigma. The sorority's focus on school readiness philanthropy spoke directly to her teaching aspirations.

After joining, Cowan quickly became philanthropy chair and got to work. She organized supply drives for Flint's Dye Elementary, a Title I school serving low-income families.

Her biggest success came with Bowling for Ariel, a single fundraiser that raised nearly $2,000 for a scholarship supporting a fellow sister's education. The school supply drives brought in hundreds of dollars worth of materials for local students.

"It gave me the opportunity to do leadership work directly in schools before I was even teaching in one," she said.

Her transformation didn't go unnoticed. UM-Flint named Cowan a Maize and Blue Distinguished Scholar, an honor recognizing academic achievement, leadership, and community engagement.

Why This Inspires

Cowan's story proves that growth lives outside comfort zones. A student who once avoided new experiences found her calling not just in teaching, but in leading others to make real change in her community.

Professor Karen Caldwell praised Cowan's dedication: "Her academic and service commitments are all the more impressive given she worked full time until beginning student teaching this semester."

Now completing student teaching in a kindergarten classroom, Cowan handles full instruction from morning until afternoon. She credits her mom's work ethic and her dad's steadiness, a veteran who served as a stay-at-home parent while her mother built her career.

Her advice to other students captures the lesson she learned: "Don't spend your life wondering what could have been. Growth doesn't happen when you're comfortable."
