A simple blood test could soon help doctors identify which COVID-19 survivors are at risk for lasting lung problems, thanks to research from nearly 1,000 patients across the UK.

Scientists from the University of Leicester, Imperial College London, and University College London found two specific molecules in the blood that signal ongoing lung damage in people who were hospitalized with COVID-19. The molecules, called MMP-7 and KL-6, appear at higher levels in patients whose lung scans show abnormalities.

Both molecules have been known to doctors before. They show up when epithelial cells get damaged, the crucial barrier lining your lungs that produces mucus, filters what you breathe, and triggers immune responses.

The research drew from the PHOSP-COVID study, which tracked both the physical and mental health of COVID patients during recovery. By testing blood samples against detailed lung scans, the team could pinpoint exactly which patients had continuing problems.
