Simple Resume Gets 3X More Interest Than Fancy Designs

Staring at a blank screen wondering how to summarize your entire career on one page is a universal job-hunting nightmare. But new research from career site Kickresume just made that task a whole lot easier.

Between April and June 2026, the company tested 204 real job applications to see which resume style actually worked best. They tried four versions: a simple single-column resume written by a human, a fancier two-column design, a generic AI-written resume, and an AI resume customized for each job.

The winner was refreshingly low-tech. The plain, single-column, human-written resume got positive responses 31% of the time. That's nearly three times better than the flashy two-column version, which only managed 12%.

Generic AI resumes performed worst of all, drawing interest just 10% of the time. Even job seekers worried about beating applicant tracking systems would do better writing their own simple resume than relying on keyword-stuffed automation.

Krista Morris, Chief Resume Writer at Virtuoso Resumes & Recruiting, confirms what the data shows. "Employers want simplicity," she explains. "That is what makes a resume pop—not bells and whistles. Just great content that speaks to qualifications and accomplishments."

The AI story gets more interesting when you add one human element: personalization. When researchers tailored those AI-written resumes to match specific job descriptions, response rates nearly doubled to 18%. So if you need AI to get started, that's fine, just make sure the final version sounds like you and speaks directly to the role.

The Bright Side

There's even better news for anyone who's ever panicked about applying within minutes of a job posting going live. Kickresume found almost no difference in response rates between brand-new listings and ones posted two weeks earlier. You don't need to win a race against the clock to land an interview.

The formula for success turns out to be beautifully straightforward: skip the graphic design flourishes and AI shortcuts. Write in your own voice, keep it simple and clean, and customize it for each specific job. Sometimes the smartest move is the most human one.
