Singapore Claims 2 Spots in Global Top 20 AI Universities

Singapore just proved it's punching above its weight in artificial intelligence education, landing two universities in the world's top 20 for AI research.

Nanyang Technological University ranked eighth globally, while the National University of Singapore placed 11th in the 2026 CSRankings for AI, released this month. No other Southeast Asian country managed to place even one institution in the top 20.

The rankings evaluated 612 universities worldwide based purely on research output in leading computer science and AI publications. This metrics-based approach focuses on actual academic contributions rather than reputation surveys, making it a solid measure of real progress in the field.

China dominated the top 10 with seven universities, led by Tsinghua University in first place and Peking University in second. Carnegie Mellon University from the United States took third, while Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology rounded out the top group.

Singapore also placed two additional universities on the broader list. Singapore Management University ranked 30th globally, and the Singapore University of Technology and Design came in at 98th.
