Maritime executives shake hands at Singapore Maritime Week 2026 hydrogen harbor craft partnership signing ceremony

Singapore Launches Hydrogen-Powered Harbor Craft Pilot

🤯 Mind Blown

Four marine companies just teamed up to build Singapore's first hydrogen fuel cell harbor boat, a major step toward cleaning up one of the world's busiest ports. If successful, the pilot could transform how 1,600 harbor vessels operate emission-free.

One of the world's busiest ports just took a giant leap toward zero-emission shipping.

ABS, Marinteknik Shipbuilders, SeaTech Solutions International, and VINSSEN signed a groundbreaking agreement during Singapore Maritime Week 2026 to develop the city-state's first hydrogen fuel cell-powered harbor craft. The collaboration brings together experts in ship design, construction, fuel cell technology, and marine engineering to prove hydrogen can work as a practical fuel for everyday port operations.

The stakes are significant. Singapore operates approximately 1,600 harbor craft that keep cargo moving through its massive port complex. These smaller vessels currently run on diesel, contributing to emissions in a region handling some of the highest shipping traffic on Earth.

Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, emphasized that Singapore's position as a maritime hub makes it the perfect testing ground for decarbonization innovation. His company will provide technical expertise from its local Electrification Center, Innovation and Research Center, and Sustainability Center.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore is fully backing the effort. Senior Director Ng Yi Han confirmed that different vessel types need different solutions, and MPA will actively work with partners to test new technologies that match real operational challenges.

Phase one starts with rigorous feasibility studies. The team will evaluate vessel concepts, design options, system optimization, and complete techno-economic analysis to determine if the technology makes commercial sense beyond just one pilot boat.

If studies prove promising, phase two could bring the vessel to life with actual construction and sea trials. Alex Wong, General Manager of Marinteknik, noted his company already delivered two electric harbor crafts and is excited to tackle hydrogen power for the first time in Singapore waters.

VINSSEN will supply the hydrogen fuel cell systems with integrated battery solutions designed to boost performance, efficiency, and reliability. CEO Chilhan Lee sees the pilot as a potential catalyst for wider hydrogen vessel adoption across the industry.

The Ripple Effect

This collaboration could influence far more than Singapore's harbor. Success here would provide a proven blueprint for busy ports worldwide struggling to balance operational demands with climate commitments. With maritime shipping accounting for nearly 3% of global emissions, solutions that work in high-traffic environments like Singapore can scale to transform the entire industry.

Together, these partners are charting a course toward cleaner seas, one hydrogen-powered harbor craft at a time.
