Singapore Police Test Iron Man Jet Suits for Rescues

Singapore's police officers might soon fly into danger zones like real-life superheroes, thanks to cutting-edge technology being tested for special operations.

The Singapore Police Force announced it's exploring jet-propelled suits and weaponized drones for high-risk missions. Officers could use the technology to board hostile vessels or confront armed suspects barricaded in buildings.

The jet suits, manufactured by UK-based Gravity Industries, weigh about 35kg and allow users to fly for roughly three minutes at speeds up to 137kmh. During a demonstration at the Police Coast Guard's Brani Regional Base, Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam explained how the technology gives officers crucial tactical advantages.

"It gives you speed, it gives you tactical advantage," Shanmugam said. "It gives cover to our officers who are coming on the boats, and it keeps down potential aggressors who may otherwise be shooting at our officers."

The weaponized drones would work alongside the flying officers, providing cover fire and helping breach booby-trapped entry points. Think of it as a high-tech partner watching your back during the most dangerous moments.

Shanmugam emphasized that these innovations aren't just about looking futuristic. They're about protecting the people who protect us, especially as threats around the world continue to evolve.

Singapore has already been using drones successfully in police work since 2023. Officers deployed them with thermal imaging sensors during an anti-vice operation in Little India last November, leading to seven arrests. They've also helped monitor crowds during New Year's celebrations and assisted in catching housebreaking suspects.

The new weaponized systems take this proven technology several steps further. Senior Assistant Commissioner Leon Chan assured the public that deployment will follow strict legal principles and safety protocols, ensuring any use remains appropriate and proportionate.

Trials for both the jet suits and armed drones will begin in the coming months. The Singapore Police Force is taking a measured approach, testing thoroughly before any operational deployment.
