Singapore to Train 1,000 Workers in Practical AI Skills

Singapore workers worried about AI taking their jobs just got a lifeline that turns fear into opportunity.

STT GDC, Alibaba Cloud, and the National Trades Union Congress announced a partnership Tuesday to give 1,000 enterprises, developers, and students direct access to advanced AI tools plus the training to actually use them. The program targets a critical gap: lots of people are curious about AI, but few know how to put it to work.

Small and medium-sized businesses struggle most with AI adoption. They lack the resources and technical know-how that big companies take for granted, leaving them stuck on the sidelines while competitors surge ahead.

This initiative changes that equation by bundling three things together: enterprise-grade AI technology, structured training programs, and ongoing support for real-world implementation. Participants will learn to apply AI across everyday business functions like operations, customer service, and software development.

"This reflects a growing effort by partners to work with the Labour Movement to better support workers, including youths and PMEs, with the skills, guidance and confidence to take on opportunities in the AI economy," said Desmond Tan, Senior Minister of State and Deputy Secretary-General of NTUC. The focus goes beyond just technical skills to building genuine confidence.

Mid-career workers stand to benefit especially. Rather than fearing displacement, they'll gain practical abilities that make them more valuable in an AI-powered economy.

The broader ambition tackles something deeper than technical training. Organizers want to shift worker sentiment from AI anxiety to AI agency, helping people see these tools as sources of resilience and opportunity rather than threats.
