Singapore to Train 40,000 Tech Workers in AI Over 3 Years

The country's Infocomm Media Development Authority announced plans to train 40,000 tech professionals in artificial intelligence skills over the next three years. This isn't just another government initiative collecting dust—major companies like OCBC, Standard Chartered, NCS, and ST Engineering are already lining up to enroll their employees.

At the heart of the effort is AIxTech, a practical training program developed with over 30 leading tech firms and universities. The program focuses on real-world skills like using AI to automate software tasks and implementing AI systems in team environments.

What makes this approach smart is its flexibility. Workers complete 18 hours of self-paced online modules that don't disrupt their jobs or studies, making it easy for companies to train entire teams at once. Trainees get hands-on experience with leading AI tools like GitHub Copilot, Claude, and Gemini, which are regularly updated to keep pace with industry changes.

After completing the core training, participants receive $472 in credits for continued access to AI coding tools. They also join a community where experienced practitioners share real solutions to business problems, turning solo learning into ongoing collaboration.

The program doesn't just focus on technical skills. Trainees learn responsible AI development, including governance principles and testing frameworks to ensure the technology is built ethically and safely.

Singapore is also expanding its tech leadership community, welcoming 21 new digital leaders to a network that has grown to over 1,600 members since 2022. Many of these leaders are working at the cutting edge of AI and emerging technologies.
