Small white emergency voice alert device mounted on wall beside senior's bedside table

Singapore Voice Device Helps Seniors Get Help in 6 Languages

🤯 Mind Blown

A new device lets seniors call for emergency help in their native language without touching a phone. The coaster-sized EVA responds to cries for help in English, Mandarin, Malay, Tamil, Cantonese, and Hokkien.

Falls send one in three Singaporean seniors to seek medical help each year, but a new voice-activated device could change how quickly they get assistance when it matters most.

The emergency voice alert device, called EVA, works like Alexa or Siri but for emergencies. Seniors who fall can simply call out for help in their preferred language, and EVA connects them directly to caregivers or emergency services through cellular networks.

Singapore startup iSense-ASV designed the wall-mounted or tabletop device specifically for the city-state's multilingual population. The system understands six languages, including dialects like Hokkien and Cantonese that many older Singaporeans speak at home.

The device doesn't need WiFi, running instead on 4G networks to ensure reliable connections when seconds count. At about the size of a drink coaster, it provides two-way communication so emergency responders can talk directly with someone who's fallen.

Beyond home use, companies are adopting EVA to protect lone workers on night shifts. Solution consultant Mustaqiim Roslan says the hands-free alerts work perfectly for employees with limited supervision who might need help quickly.

The company pairs EVA with radar-based fall sensors that monitor at-risk seniors in real time. Unlike cameras or wearables, the radar technology protects privacy while still detecting when someone has fallen and needs help.

The Ripple Effect

iSense-ASV showcased EVA at HealthTechX Asia 2026 alongside 22 other health technology startups addressing Singapore's aging population challenges. The conference featured innovations from magnetic field therapy for snoring to AI-enhanced ultrasound mapping for cancer diagnosis.

Senior Minister Tan Kiat How emphasized that AI and health technology will transform Singapore's healthcare system as the nation becomes a super-aged society. The government launched HEALIX, a cloud platform accelerating AI healthcare projects, and updated AI guidelines to ensure patient safety comes first.

Singapore extended subsidies for genetic testing programs and now requires all licensed health providers to contribute patient data to the National Electronic Health Record. These moves create the infrastructure for innovations like EVA to scale nationwide.

The startup plans to expand into Europe and Japan, adding Spanish and Basque language capabilities. As aging populations grow worldwide, voice-activated emergency systems could become as common in homes as smoke detectors.

Technology that speaks your grandmother's language might just save her life.
