Singapore's Young Table Tennis Team Eyes Asian Games Glory

Singapore's table tennis players are heading into the Asian Games with something to prove, and recent wins suggest they might just pull off some surprises.

The team returns to Asia's biggest sporting stage September 19 through October 4 after going home empty-handed in 2023. That medal-less performance marked their first strikeout this century, coming during a major shift as Singapore moved away from recruiting Chinese-born players to developing local talent instead.

But three years of rebuilding are paying off. The 10-strong squad, averaging just 22 years old, has been racking up impressive victories against teams ranked well above them.

The men's team retained their Southeast Asian Games gold in December 2025, with 20-year-old Izaac Quek defending both his singles crown and doubles title. Quek and doubles partner Koen Pang, 24, climbed to fourth in world rankings earlier this year and won silver at the 2024 Asian Championships.

The women's squad shocked observers by capturing bronze at the 2025 Asian Table Tennis Team Championships. Teenagers Chloe Lai, 19, and Loy Ming Ying, 16, became the first local players to reach the women's doubles quarter-finals at February's Singapore Smash.

Ming Ying will make her Asian Games debut alongside four other first-timers. "Playing more big competitions gives me more experience," she said, adding she'll give her all despite being the underdog.

What makes this team special isn't just their youth or their wins. It's watching homegrown talent rise through a system that bet on local development over imported stars.

Five players are full-time students juggling textbooks with training camps. They're competing against Asia's powerhouses while managing heavy academic workloads, proving dedication can level the playing field.

National women's coach Jing Junhong has watched her players grow more aggressive and clinical under pressure. "They played above themselves to win the Asian team bronze," she said, crediting their willingness to face top-ranked opponents without fear.

The team heads to Japan for a 17-day training camp before competition begins, where they'll spar with players from China, Japan, and beyond. No medals are expected, but these young athletes have already shown they're capable of the unexpected.

Singapore Table Tennis Association president Poh Li San summed it up best: "All we want from this very young team is to go out there and fight for every point, make breakthroughs, and the results will follow."
