Single Mom Earns Teaching Degree Thanks to Arizona Scholarship

Angela Paschal walked across the graduation stage carrying more than her diploma. She carried years of determination, gratitude, and the knowledge that people believed in her when times were hardest.

The single mother and aspiring educator completed her Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education with a 3.87 GPA, earning Honors-Summa Cum Laude distinction. She made the dean's list multiple times along the way.

Paschal achieved this milestone through Arizona PBS' early childhood educator scholarship program, supported by First Things First, Arizona's early childhood agency. Without that support, she nearly had to stop pursuing her lifelong dream.

"There were moments when I honestly did not know how I was going to continue," Paschal told Arizona PBS. The scholarship provided more than tuition money during her toughest semester.

As a first-generation college graduate, Paschal faced financial and personal challenges that would have stopped many students. The encouragement from scholarship staff became just as vital as the financial assistance itself.

"Your support was not just financial assistance, it was encouragement, hope, relief and a reminder that there are still people willing to believe in students during hard times," she explained. Those words of support arrived exactly when she needed them most.

Paschal's story shows how targeted support can transform not just one life, but an entire community. She will now educate young children during their most formative years, passing forward the kindness she received.

The program that helped Paschal continues supporting aspiring early childhood educators across Arizona. It offers scholarships for Child Development Associate credentials, associate degrees, and bachelor's degrees.

"Thank you for investing not only in my education, but in my future and in my life during a time I truly needed it," Paschal said. She promises to carry that gratitude forward for years to come.
