Sioux Falls Scholarship Honors 3 Leaders for 30+ Years

Three decades ago, a tragedy that shook Sioux Falls became the foundation for something beautiful: a scholarship that turns grief into opportunity for future business leaders.

The Spirit of Sioux Falls scholarship honors David Birkeland, Angus Anson, and Roger Hainje, three local business leaders killed in a plane crash on April 19, 1993. The small state-owned aircraft went down in eastern Iowa, claiming eight lives including South Dakota Governor George Mickelson as they returned from an economic development meeting.

Since 1994, the Sioux Falls Development Foundation has awarded 95 scholarships to students pursuing business degrees. Last year alone, two students received $6,500 each to attend college or technical school, with the hope they'll bring their talents back to the community.

That's exactly what happened with Sara Lum, a 2021 recipient who now co-owns marketing firm Strategie, LLC. The scholarship made it possible for her to pursue an MBA in her early 30s when the financial risk felt overwhelming.

"As a small business owner committed to this community, receiving a scholarship honoring three leaders who contributed so much to Sioux Falls was both meaningful and inspiring," Lum said.

The Ripple Effect

The scholarship does more than ease financial burdens. It creates a cycle of investment where today's students become tomorrow's business leaders, exactly what Birkeland, Anson, and Hainje would have wanted.

Karen Ruhland, director of research, membership and communications for the Foundation, sees workforce development as essential to economic growth. "This is a significant scholarship that makes obtaining a degree more affordable, while highlighting their legacy and dedication to our community," she said.

Students from Lincoln or Minnehaha County can apply, whether they attend local schools or study elsewhere. The Foundation also accepts applications from students attending college in those counties, regardless of where they're from. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a business program and have completed at least one semester or year depending on their program type.

The selection process looks beyond grades. Recipients are chosen for their understanding of business's role in society, their motivation, academic achievements, and financial need.

What started as a memorial has become a living legacy, proving that even in loss, communities can create lasting hope.
