Slovakia Rallies After Star Injury, Reaches Olympic Semis

When Juraj Slafkovsky hit the boards face-first and lay motionless on the ice, Slovakia's Olympic dream could have ended right there. Instead, it became the moment that proved just how special this team really is.

The 21-year-old Montreal Canadiens star slowly made his way to the bench with an ice pack pressed against his neck during Wednesday's quarterfinal game against Germany at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics. His teammates were already down the ice, answering the scary moment in the best way possible.

Milos Kelemen scored just seconds later, fighting off a defender to make it 2-0. On the very next shift, Oliver Okuliar broke free and slipped the puck through the goalie's legs. The Slovak bench erupted, and there was Slafkovsky, ice pack still on his neck, jumping up and down with pure joy.

Slovakia cruised to a 6-2 victory and will face the United States in Friday's semifinal. A win there means playing for gold, something this small nation has never achieved with NHL players in the lineup.

"You saw right away, four guys going in there, trying to protect him," said forward Dalibor Dvorsky, who had a goal and an assist. "That shows what kind of team we are, how we care about each other."

Slafkovsky returned to the game and added an assist on an empty-net goal. The star who scored seven goals at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and won bronze didn't need to carry his team this time. Twelve different Slovak players recorded at least one point against Germany.

Slovakia's coach Vladimir Orszagh calls them a "band of brothers," and Wednesday proved why. This isn't a team built around a few superstars. It's 25 players who show up for each other every single day.

Twenty-year-old Dvorsky set an Olympic record for NHL rookies with six points in the tournament. But he's quick to deflect attention to the group. Captain Tomas Tatar echoed that sentiment after the win, praising how his team stayed focused instead of getting rattled.

The Slovaks lost the bronze medal game at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. They've waited 16 years for another shot at the podium with the world's best players. Now they're just two games away from standing on top of it.

"We are still living our dream," Orszagh said. "We are in the top four."
