Smart Running Vest Uses Radar to Keep Athletes Safe

Running alone shouldn't feel like a risk, but for millions of joggers worldwide, safety concerns turn every solo workout into a calculated decision about routes, timing, and backup plans.

A team of Dutch engineers just launched RunSafePro, a smart vest that transforms personal safety for runners, cyclists, and walkers. The wearable packs rear-facing radar that detects anyone approaching from behind up to 100 feet away, giving users crucial seconds to react.

The system sends alerts through vibration, audio, or visual signals depending on your preference. While it doesn't specify if someone's approaching from the left or right, the 30-meter detection range gives plenty of time to move to safety or simply stay aware.

Beyond radar, the vest includes an emergency button that instantly shares your GPS location with loved ones. A single press sends a silent alert to primary contacts, while a double press triggers a loud alarm and notifies up to 50 emergency contacts.

The technology gets even smarter with fall detection. If you suddenly stop moving, the system checks in through your phone or smartwatch. No response within a set timeframe automatically alerts your emergency contacts.

Reflective materials and 360-degree adaptive lighting make wearers visible to drivers from far away, even in darkness. The vest fits sizes small through double XL and heights from 5'3" to 6'7" with adjustable straps.

The electronics module removes easily for washing, withstands rain and sweat, and runs for three to six hours per charge. Users pair it with their smartphone or eSIM-enabled smartwatch from Apple, Samsung, or Garmin.

The Ripple Effect

This invention addresses a widespread problem that keeps countless people from exercising outdoors. Women especially report skipping runs or choosing treadmills over outdoor routes due to safety fears, despite the mental and physical benefits of outdoor exercise.

The vest costs $119 during the Kickstarter campaign (retail price $175) with a 99-cent monthly app subscription. Early backers get six months free. The team tested prototypes on multiple body types and plans October shipping if the campaign succeeds.

While designed primarily for shorter runs and interval sessions, the technology works for any outdoor activity where visibility and emergency response matter. Dog walkers, hikers, and commuters can benefit from the same safety features.
