Luke Winston-Almanzar discovered this while electrifying his home a few years ago. The realization led him to create Reservoir, a startup making water heaters that actually think.

The company's new heat pump water heater learns your daily habits and predicts exactly when you'll need hot water. Then it does something clever: it heats up when electricity rates are lowest, often in the middle of the night while you sleep.

The savings are real. Families can cut up to $800 off their annual energy bills without changing a single habit.

Winston-Almanzar, formerly chief business officer at 3D-printing company Formlabs, partnered with Gabriel Parisi-Amon from Apple and Jake Felser from Blue Origin. Together they tackled a problem hiding in plain sight in 130 million American homes.

Traditional water heaters work like cavemen with thermostats. They heat water constantly, whether you need it or not, and they don't care if electricity costs 10 times more at 6 PM than at 3 AM.

In Groton, Massachusetts, the difference is dramatic. Off-peak electricity costs five cents per kilowatt-hour. During peak times? Fifty cents.

Winston-Almanzar puts it simply: "The average person doesn't care when we heat your water. We can heat at three in the morning. We can heat at four in the afternoon. What you care about is when you get in the shower."

The Reservoir system also plays nice with solar panels, firing up when the sun is generating free power on your roof. It's quieter than older models and actually delivers hot water when you want it, solving the frustrating wait times that plagued earlier heat pump designs.

The Ripple Effect

This innovation matters beyond individual savings. Water heating accounts for nearly 20% of home energy use nationwide. If millions of water heaters started using electricity during off-peak hours, it would reduce strain on the power grid during high-demand periods.

The shift also helps renewable energy work better. Wind turbines and solar panels often generate power when demand is low, and smart devices that use that energy help balance the system.

Reservoir's upfront cost matches other quality water heaters, removing the biggest barrier to adoption. Families get the efficiency of a heat pump with the brains of a smartphone app, no premium required.

The device represents a quiet revolution in home energy. Not flashy solar panels on the roof, but invisible intelligence in the basement, saving money and energy while you brush your teeth and start your day.
