Smithfield Awards $800K in Scholarships to 126 Students

Smithfield Foods is sending 126 college students back to campus this fall with something priceless: financial peace of mind and $800,000 in scholarship funding for the 2026-27 school year.

The need-based scholarships go to children of current and retired Smithfield employees, offering up to $7,500 per year for up to four years at 10 partner universities. That's a potential $30,000 per student to chase their dreams without drowning in debt.

Two North Carolina universities received significant support this year. Fayetteville State University students gained $165,000 in funding, while NC State students received $52,000. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln led all schools with $195,300 in awards.

"We're making higher education more accessible while investing in the next generation of leaders," said Jim Monroe, Smithfield's vice president of corporate affairs. The program specifically targets families who might otherwise struggle to afford college costs.

The Ripple Effect

Since launching in 2002, the Smithfield Scholarship Program has grown into a powerful force for opportunity. The company has now awarded more than 1,900 scholarships totaling over $11 million across nearly 25 years.

This investment goes beyond individual families. When companies support employee children through college, they strengthen entire communities. These 126 students represent future teachers, engineers, nurses, and entrepreneurs who might not have had the same shot without this support.

The program spans universities across the Midwest and Southeast, from Kansas State to Virginia State. Students at Iowa State received $118,600 this year, while South Dakota State students gained $60,000 in funding.
