Soccer Star With 4.0 GPA Wins $10K NCAA Scholarship
Caroline Kelly balanced All-American soccer, a perfect GPA in biomedical engineering, and community service at Tufts University. Now she's one of just 21 female athletes nationwide to earn a prestigious NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
Balancing college athletics with challenging academics is tough enough, but Caroline Kelly took it to another level entirely.
The Tufts University senior just earned a $10,000 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, one of only 21 female athletes across all three NCAA divisions to receive the honor for fall sports. Kelly graduates in May with a perfect 4.0 GPA in biomedical engineering, a degree known for being one of the toughest undergraduate programs.
Kelly spent four years as a midfielder for Tufts women's soccer, helping her team reach two NCAA Tournament Final Fours. She earned All-American honors in 2024 and finished her career with 21 assists, third most in school history.
Her senior season came with unexpected challenges. An injury limited Kelly to just 13 games, but she still helped the Jumbos win their first conference championship in over two decades.
"Caroline is, quite simply, the most skillful college player I have ever coached," said head coach Martha Whiting, now in her 27th season at Tufts. "What makes Caroline truly exceptional is that her athletic dedication is matched, and perhaps exceeded, by her academic achievement."

Between practices and games, Kelly worked as a research intern at Harvard and MIT labs, joined engineering honor societies, and volunteered with Morgan's Message, an organization fighting mental health stigma among student athletes. She also held an engineering internship at a biomedical company in Cambridge.
The NCAA scholarship will help fund her master's degree in biomedical engineering at Tufts, where she'll continue through the school's accelerated program. She's also staying on as an assistant soccer coach.
Why This Inspires
Kelly's story shows that excellence in one area doesn't require sacrificing another. She proved that with proper discipline and support, student athletes can pursue demanding academics, compete at elite levels, and give back to their communities simultaneously.
Her coach's words reveal something deeper: Kelly succeeded not by choosing between her passions, but by bringing the same dedication to everything she did. That mindset took her from a small midfielder in Southborough, Massachusetts to becoming one of the nation's top scholar athletes.
Now she's paying it forward, staying at Tufts to help coach the next generation while advancing medical technology research.
