Solar and Wind Now Cost Less Than Coal and Gas
Clean energy just hit a major milestone. Solar and wind paired with batteries now deliver cheaper electricity than fossil fuels in many regions worldwide.
The clean energy revolution just became impossible to ignore from a dollars-and-cents perspective.
Solar and wind power paired with battery storage now produce electricity more cheaply than coal and gas plants, according to a new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency. In sunny regions, solar with batteries costs between $54 and $82 per megawatt hour, down from over $100 in 2020.
For comparison, new coal plants in China cost $70 to $85 per megawatt hour, while new gas capacity tops $100 globally. Clean energy isn't just catching up anymore. It's winning on price.
The transformation happened faster than almost anyone predicted. Since 2010, solar panel costs have dropped 87%. Onshore wind fell 55%. Battery storage plummeted an astonishing 93%.
These aren't experimental technologies anymore. They're proven, scalable solutions delivering reliable power when the grid needs it. The "firm levelized cost" calculation includes making intermittent sources like wind and solar available on demand, proving they can compete head-to-head with always-on fossil fuel plants.

Wind power tells a similar success story. In places like Inner Mongolia, Brazil, Germany, and Australia, wind with battery storage ranges from $59 to $94 per megawatt hour. By 2030, that's expected to drop to $49 to $75 across those markets.
The Ripple Effect
This cost breakthrough removes the biggest excuse countries had for sticking with fossil fuels. Nations no longer face a choice between environmental responsibility and economic sense. They can have both.
The trend line points even more optimistic. Solar with battery storage could fall another 30% by 2030 and 40% by 2035. The best-performing sites could produce electricity for under $50 per megawatt hour within a decade.
That means cleaner air, more stable energy prices, and thousands of new jobs in growing industries. Communities near solar and wind farms benefit from tax revenue and local employment without the health costs of coal pollution.
The energy transition isn't some distant dream requiring sacrifice anymore. It's an economic opportunity that's already here, getting better and cheaper every year.
