Solar panels are about to get a second life, thanks to a simple switch from solid glue to liquid.

Researchers at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands developed panels that use liquid filling instead of the plastic sheets that currently seal most solar cells. When these new panels reach the end of their 25-year lifespan, workers can simply drain the liquid and separate the parts for reuse.

The team sandwiches solar cells between two glass sheets, seals the edges with a flexible material, then injects liquid through a small hole with a syringe. They tested eight different liquids, from silicone oil to plain water, to find the best performers.

The real test came when they compared these liquid-filled panels against traditional ones. Both versions performed equally well in efficiency tests and survived brutal accelerated aging experiments including extreme heat, cold, and humidity cycles. The liquid panels showed zero performance loss.

Right now, recycling solar panels remains expensive and complicated because separating the glued layers damages most components. This liquid approach changes everything. Panels become truly circular: drain, disassemble, reuse, repeat.

The timing matters enormously. The first wave of residential solar installations from the early 2000s will start retiring in the next few years. Without better recycling solutions, millions of panels could end up in landfills despite containing valuable materials like silver, silicon, and glass.

Bothra's team estimates manufacturing costs match traditional panels for now, removing a major barrier to adoption. Their partner company Biosphere Solar is already working on scaling the technology to full-size commercial panels.

The liquid design brings bonus benefits beyond recycling. The fluid can help cool panels, boosting efficiency on hot days. It also protects sensitive next-generation perovskite cells from moisture damage, solving a major stability challenge that has held back commercialization.

The researchers published their findings in Progress in Photovoltaics, calling it a demonstration that efficient circular solar modules are within reach.
