Solar Panels on Farms Safe for Cows, Experts Confirm

🤯 Mind Blown

After 300 cows died in Switzerland with solar panels suspected, veterinary experts and researchers have cleared photovoltaic systems of blame. The real culprit? Faulty electrical wiring that can happen with any farm equipment.

When 300 dairy cows died in Switzerland and solar panels got the blame, farmers everywhere started worrying about renewable energy on their barns. But veterinary experts and electrical engineers have good news: the solar panels aren't the problem.

Stray voltage, tiny electrical currents that can flow through barn floors and equipment, has been around since the first milking machines were installed. When cows contact these currents through metal stalls or water bowls, they can feel mild shocks that cause stress and health problems over time.

Professor Ronald Erskine from Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine has investigated stray voltage cases for decades. He's never encountered a single case caused by solar panels themselves.

The reason is simple. Solar panels produce DC current, while cows are most sensitive to AC current from standard electrical systems. "Installing a solar system is not more dangerous than installing a new milk pump or water heater in a barn," Erskine explained.

A 2021 Dutch study looked at 93 dairy farms where cows showed unusual behavior, with farmers often suspecting solar panels as the cause. The researchers found no connection between rooftop solar and cow health problems.

"Farms with cows with abnormal behavior were equally likely to have solar panels on their roofs as farms where cows behaved normally," said Professor Gerdien van Schaik from Utrecht University.

Switzerland's solar association Swissolar confirmed that photovoltaic systems can be ruled out in the Swiss case. The deaths likely resulted from poor electrical installation or grounding, issues that could happen with any barn equipment.

The Bright Side

This clarification removes a major barrier to farm sustainability. Dairy operations across Europe and North America have been hesitant to install solar panels after hearing scary stories about livestock deaths.

Now farmers can confidently add renewable energy to their barns, knowing the technology itself poses no unique risk. The key is hiring qualified electricians who properly wire and ground all systems, including inverters that convert solar DC current to AC power.

Andreas Iliou, a solar consultant, notes that modern barns already have complex electrical systems including milking machines, fans, and water heaters. Adding solar panels doesn't change the fundamental need for proper grounding and maintenance.

Even the Swiss People's Party, which called for a temporary ban on barn solar installations, can rest easier knowing the real solution is better electrical standards, not avoiding clean energy.

Farmers worldwide can now pursue both goals at once: producing sustainable energy while keeping their herds healthy and productive.
