Somaliland Water Experts Train in Israel on Tech Solutions

A team of water experts from Somaliland returned home this week with new skills that could transform how their communities access clean water. The specialists completed the first phase of intensive training in Israel, where they learned modern water management techniques and toured state-of-the-art facilities.

The program was organized by MATC-MASHAV, Israel's Agency for International Development Cooperation, and focused on practical solutions for water planning and service delivery. Participants visited cutting-edge water treatment plants and observed technologies currently used to manage scarce water resources in challenging environments.

Engineer Sharmake, part of the delegation, said the experience provided invaluable insights. As a member of the first Somaliland team to visit Israel for this purpose, he described the training as a meaningful step toward improving national water resource management back home.

The group also traveled south to explore innovative community projects. They visited the Al-Furaa Off-Grid Hub, developed by the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies in partnership with local Bedouin communities and agricultural technology companies.

The hub showcases integrated solutions for drinking water, sustainable sanitation, energy, and organic waste management. These systems operate independently of large infrastructure, making them particularly relevant for remote or underserved areas.

The Ripple Effect

The knowledge gained during this training extends far beyond the individual participants. When these experts return to their communities, they bring back proven techniques that can improve water access for thousands of families facing daily challenges with clean water supply.

Water scarcity affects health, education, and economic opportunity. Better water management means children spend less time collecting water and more time in school, families face fewer waterborne illnesses, and farmers can irrigate crops more efficiently.

This partnership demonstrates how international cooperation can address universal human needs. The technologies and strategies learned in Israel's water sector, developed out of necessity in an arid climate, translate directly to similar challenges in Somaliland.
