South Africa Expands Student Options Beyond Traditional Degrees

Thousands of South African students just learned their matric results, and many with bachelor's passes are discovering something surprising: they have more educational options than they realized.

The confusion stems from something called the Admission Point Score, or APS. A bachelor's pass requires an APS of at least 23 points, but universities typically need 28 or higher for most programs. Students with lower APS scores can access extended university programs that add a bridging year or spread a three-year degree across four years. This gives students extra support to succeed at their own pace. Universities of technology offer practical diploma programs requiring APS scores of 25 to 26, opening doors to hands-on careers.

Technical Vocational Education and Training Colleges provide another strong option. These institutions offer valuable career pathways with bursaries available through sector education authorities. Many students dismissed these programs in the past, but improved career guidance is helping families see their real value.

Private colleges serve families who can afford higher fees, while second-chance matric programs let students retake specific exams without returning to full-time school. Registration happens at examination centers, with tests offered in June and November.
