South Africa Gets 6 Million Vaccines to Fight Disease

South Africa's cattle farmers just got powerful backup in their fight against a devastating livestock disease, and it's coming from across the globe.

One million vaccine doses arrived from Argentina this weekend, the first delivery in a six million dose deal that will protect cattle from foot and mouth disease. Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen announced that another five million doses will arrive in March from supplier Biogénesis Bagó.

The country is completely changing its approach to the disease. Instead of just responding when outbreaks happen, South Africa will now vaccinate cattle nationwide with the goal of reaching at least 80% of the nation's 14 million head of cattle by December.

The international response has been remarkable. Botswana's Vaccine Institute has already delivered two million doses since the recent outbreak and committed to monthly shipments going forward. Turkey's Dollvet is also supplying vaccines through local distributor Dunevax.

The Ripple Effect

This vaccination campaign means more than just healthy cattle. Foot and mouth disease can devastate farm economies and food security, threatening the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and the protein supply for millions of South Africans.

The story gets even better. After more than 20 years, South Africa is producing its own vaccines again. On February 6, the Agricultural Research Council delivered the first batch of 12,900 locally made vaccines to Minister Steenhuisen, and those doses are already heading to provinces across the country.

The council is starting with 20,000 vaccines per week but plans to scale up to 200,000 weekly by 2027. That local production capability means South Africa won't have to rely solely on imports during future outbreaks.
