South Africa Wins in Historic Double Super Over Thriller

Sometimes the most thrilling victories come from the closest calls, and South Africa just delivered one for the history books.

The Proteas defeated Afghanistan in an unprecedented double Super Over finish at the T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad, marking the first time in tournament history that two consecutive Super Overs were needed to decide a match. The game tied three times before South Africa finally clinched victory by four runs.

With 13 runs needed in the final over of regulation play, Afghanistan looked poised for their first-ever T20 World Cup win against South Africa. Pressure got to South African bowler Kagiso Rabada, who bowled one wide and two no-balls, giving Afghanistan hope with just two runs needed off a free hit.

But drama struck when Mujeeb Ur Rahman was run out attempting a second run, leaving the scores tied at 187. The stadium erupted as the game headed to its first Super Over.

Afghanistan's batters smashed 17 runs in the first Super Over. South Africa's Dewald Brevis launched a six on the first ball, but got dismissed on the second, replaced by Tristan Stubbs who tied the game again with a last-ball six.

The Ripple Effect

The second Super Over showcased why cricket captures hearts worldwide. South Africa's David Miller and Stubbs combined for a powerful 23 runs, launching three sixes between them.

Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored a brilliant 84 in regulation play, smashed three consecutive sixes to keep his team's hopes alive. Needing six runs off the final ball, spinner Keshav Maharaj bowled a wide, reducing the target to five.

But Maharaj kept his composure, and his team caught Gurbaz in the covers to seal the historic win.

Earlier in the match, South African openers Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock built a crucial 100-run partnership, both reaching half-centuries in the same over. Rickelton scored 61 off just 28 balls while De Kock made 59 off 41.

The match showcased exceptional performances on both sides, with Afghanistan's explosive PowerPlay contrasting sharply with South Africa's cautious start. Gurbaz's 84 runs came at a strike rate of 200, featuring four fours and seven sixes that kept his team competitive throughout.
