South African Firm Builds Fashion's Future for Designers
Kirsten Leo's consulting firm LEO SZN helps African fashion designers turn beautiful clothes into profitable businesses. She's now building an "LVMH of Africa" to create market access for emerging talent across the continent.

A beautiful dress means nothing if the designer behind it can't pay the bills or find buyers who will stock it.
Kirsten Leo spotted this gap in Africa's fashion industry and built a business around fixing it. Her firm LEO SZN works behind the scenes, helping designers navigate everything from fabric sourcing to cash flow management to getting their collections in front of retail buyers.
Leo isn't a designer herself. She calls herself "far more analytical, far less creative," which is exactly why the partnership works.
She helps translate creative vision into commercial reality, researching consumer behavior, textile trends, and market conditions. Sometimes her job means telling a designer that a gorgeous concept simply won't sell in South Africa right now.
The biggest obstacle she faces isn't lack of talent. It's pride.
"If you've got too much pride, you're too proud to ask for help," Leo says. She's seen too many pitches that amount to: "Look at this beautiful thing I made. Give me a million rand."
Why This Inspires

Leo believes investment money exists for African fashion businesses. The problem is that businesses aren't investment-ready because designers don't have the compliance, strategy, and financial planning that investors require.
Over the past two years, LEO SZN has worked with 28 clients. At least 26 have continued developing collections, showcasing internationally, or securing retail placements.
Now Leo is taking her vision further. She's one of 15 finalists in Création Africa, an intensive business incubation programme run by the French Embassy and French Institute of South Africa.
Her goal? Building the "LVMH of Africa," a complete ecosystem connecting pattern makers, manufacturers, and retailers to turn African designers into luxury brands.
She's starting with the African Luxury Index, a project that will work with 15 designers through workshops, helping them develop collections from sketch to showroom. Retail and boutique buyers will then view the finished collections, creating the market access emerging designers desperately need.
The French Institute and Uber Africa have already provided initial funding. Leo's team has grown from just her to four people.
She's learned hard lessons along the way, including a painful one about mixing friendship with business. But those experiences have only sharpened her focus on building proper structures behind creativity.
Leo preserves craftsmanship while insisting that beautiful clothes need solid business foundations. For her, discipline and capital can build something transformative for the continent.
Africa's fashion talent is finally getting the business backbone it deserves.
