South African Mall Fundraiser Raises $500 for Shelter Pets

When SPCA Uitenhage faced losing their building, complete strangers showed up with open hearts and wallets at a weekend mall event that raised R9,248 (about $500 USD) for animals in need.

The Kariega shelter organized a fundraising stand at Corkwood Square Mall with help from mall manager Ronel Britz, who coordinated entertainment including Paw Patrol characters, martial arts displays, and a traditional Chinese dragon performance. Families streamed through the mall all weekend, dropping coins in donation tins and buying restaurant voucher booklets donated by local Spar stores.

Young models from TMA Models carried donation baskets through the crowds, encouraging shoppers to contribute. "The SPCA Uitenhage has been an ongoing beneficiary for TMA Models," said founder Trish Basson. "We have seen first-hand how they love and care for the animals with respect."

Vice-chairperson Christelle Erasmus said the team was "blown away" by the turnout. "We raised more than we anticipated, and we are truly grateful to the public," she said.

The weekend success pushed the shelter to 63% of their fundraising target, with R1,712,932 raised toward purchasing a permanent home. The organization has been rallying community support through music trivia nights and sporting events as their eviction deadline approaches.

The Ripple Effect

This single weekend event represents something bigger than dollars raised. Strangers are becoming champions for animals they've never met, young models are learning the power of giving back, and local businesses are donating resources to keep rescue animals safe.

"In our current challenging situation, people, even complete strangers, are coming to the fore," Erasmus said. "We are truly blessed in abundance."

The outpouring has restored the team's faith during uncertain times. "We have an amazing management team and staff at the kennels," Erasmus added. "We are staying positive that this is going to work out, for us and for the animals we need to look after."

When a community rallies around those who cannot speak for themselves, everyone wins.
