South Africa's Blitzboks Win First Hong Kong Sevens Title

The Blitzboks had tried and failed four times before, but on April 19, they finally conquered rugby sevens' most prestigious tournament with a crushing 35-7 win over Argentina in Hong Kong.

For South Africa's sevens team, Hong Kong had become the elephant in the room. They'd reached four finals at the iconic tournament without ever lifting the trophy, making each near-miss sting a little more.

"I needed to create a healthy culture and a healthy environment," Snyman explained. "Going back to the roots of what's always been part of Springbok Sevens success, which was the team culture."

The team spent months working on the small things: how players greet each other, eat together, and speak to one another. Standards were set around respect and brotherhood, creating an atmosphere where players felt they were part of something bigger than themselves.

On the field, Snyman built a defensive system that turned South Africa's smaller size into an advantage. Through smart reads, relentless pressure, and technically sound tackling, the Blitzboks created a foundation that opponents couldn't crack.

The transformation showed immediate results. Under Snyman's guidance, South Africa won the World Rugby Sevens Repechage tournament to qualify for the Paris Olympics, then shocked observers by claiming bronze.
