South Africa's Electric Trucks Hit 250,000km Milestone

Electric trucks are officially powering real cargo across South African roads, and the numbers prove it works.

Volvo Trucks South Africa announced its battery-electric fleet has collectively traveled more than 250,000 kilometers in commercial service since launching locally in 2023. While that might seem modest compared to the 400 million kilometers Volvo's electric trucks have logged globally, it marks a major step forward for a country just beginning its transition to zero-emission freight transport.

The fleet ranges from lightweight 8-tonne delivery trucks hauling five to seven tonnes through residential neighborhoods to heavy-duty tractor units pulling interlink trailers with over 32 tonnes of payload. Some vehicles average 2,000 kilometers monthly on shorter routes, while the hardest-working units consistently cover 10,000 kilometers each month.

Eric Parry, senior manager of sustainable solutions at Volvo Trucks South Africa, says the achievement reflects growing confidence in electric transport. "One of the most satisfying aspects of this journey has been seeing electric trucks move from being a future concept to becoming part of everyday transport operations," he explains.

All customer fleets currently charge at their own depots or loading facilities using private infrastructure. Companies combine overnight AC charging with quick top-ups during the day, customizing strategies to match their delivery schedules.

The Ripple Effect

The real value extends beyond the kilometers traveled. Every delivery run generates data about battery performance, charging strategies, driver experience, and uptime requirements under South African conditions.

That practical knowledge matters enormously. Fleet operators need local proof that electric trucks can handle their routes, climates, and business demands before investing in the technology at scale.

Volvo supports customers through dedicated dealer networks offering real-time battery monitoring, specialized 24/7 roadside assistance, and range prediction tools. The company plans to introduce next-generation electric trucks later this year with greater range and additional power options.

Parry views the quarter-million kilometer mark as a beginning rather than a destination. "While 250,000 kilometers is an important milestone, it is what those kilometres represent that matters most: growing customer confidence, valuable operational experience, and a foundation for the next generation of electric transport."
