South Africa's First Accredited Public Toxicology Lab Opens

When someone dies unexpectedly, families deserve answers. The Western Cape just made finding those answers more reliable by launching South Africa's first internationally accredited public forensic toxicology laboratory.

The Observatory-based lab earned ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation from the South African National Accreditation System. This certification confirms the facility meets the same rigorous standards used by top forensic labs worldwide.

The lab specializes in detecting carbon monoxide poisoning and identifying drugs in forensic specimens. These tests help investigators solve cases involving fires, suspected poisonings, drug overdoses, and unexplained deaths.

"When someone passes away, those left behind often want to understand what happened," said Western Cape Health and Wellness MEC Mireille Wenger. "Where the cause of death is not immediately clear, forensic toxicology can play an important role in providing answers."

The accreditation means forensic pathologists, police investigators, prosecutors, and courts can now rely on toxicology evidence that meets international quality standards. Before accreditation, every testing method underwent extensive validation to prove its accuracy, precision, and reliability.

What makes this lab special is its integrated approach. Toxicology scientists work directly alongside forensic pathologists and investigative teams. This collaboration has shortened turnaround times and improved the reliability of test results.

Chief forensic toxicologist Bronwen Davies emphasized the lab's commitment to the public sector. "By meeting international standards, we're strengthening the Western Cape health system and ensuring that forensic toxicology services are available where they matter most: in the public sector."

While the lab already performed these tests before certification, the accreditation provides independent verification that builds confidence across the entire justice system. It represents years of dedication by a specialized team working to bring world-class forensic services to South African communities.
