South Australia Makes Public Schools Free for All Students
South Australian families will no longer pay public school fees starting next year, after both major parties backed the historic $300 million education reform. The bipartisan support means the policy will proceed regardless of who wins the March 21 election.
Parents across South Australia are celebrating a breakthrough that will save families hundreds of dollars a year while ensuring every child can access quality public education without financial barriers.
The state's Labor government announced Sunday it will eliminate all public school fees for primary and high school students starting in 2027. The plan costs $300 million over four years and has already gained critical support from the opposition Liberal Party, making it nearly certain to become law.
Liberal leader Ashton Hurn gave her party's conditional backing on Monday, saying "pulling levers to help when it comes to cost of living has merit." She wants more details on funding sources before new legislation passes Parliament, but the principle has won cross-party support.
The Greens also backed the plan, with MLC Robert Simms noting it mirrored his own policy proposal. He's pushing for additional support including free breakfasts, lunches, excursions and uniforms at all public schools.
Labor didn't stop there. On Monday, Premier Peter Malinauskas announced plans to expand out of school hours care to 68 additional schools over four years, creating 2,300 new spots for working families.
"Working parents don't always finish at 3:30 in the afternoon when school finishes," Malinauskas said. "You don't want to see parents having to make the diabolical choice between either picking up their kid from school or having to work."
Education Minister Blair Boyer called the childcare expansion an "economic lever" that would boost the state economy by enabling parents to work full days. He noted that current school hours haven't kept pace with modern working life, while OSHC has been forgotten for years.
The Ripple Effect
The combined policies address two major pressure points for Australian families: education costs and work-life balance. Eliminating school fees removes a significant expense from household budgets during a cost of living crunch.
The childcare expansion creates opportunities beyond just convenience. When parents can work without worrying about school pickup times, families gain financial stability and career growth becomes possible for caregivers who previously had limited options.
The bipartisan support signals something bigger too. When political rivals agree on investing in children and families, it shows these issues transcend party politics.
South Australia is showing the rest of the country what's possible when governments prioritize removing barriers to education and supporting working families.
