South Korea Builds First Hydrogen Tram Refueling Station

South Korea is about to make public transportation history, and a mid-sized tech company is leading the charge.

NK Tech has won the contract to build the nation's first hydrogen tram refueling station in Daejeon, beating seven larger competitors for the prestigious project. The facility will power an ambitious new tram network designed to carry passengers across the city without releasing a single gram of carbon dioxide into the air.

The hydrogen-powered trams will travel more than 200 kilometers on a single refueling. That's roughly the distance from Seoul to Daejeon and back, all while keeping the air clean.

The project will roll out in two phases, starting with gaseous hydrogen refueling facilities for the initial tram operations. The second phase will introduce liquid hydrogen technology using atmospheric vaporization methods, a first for South Korea's transportation sector.

Once complete, the station will supply over 300 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. That's enough to refuel more than four trams simultaneously, keeping the entire network running smoothly throughout the day.

The Ripple Effect

This project represents more than just cleaner trams in one city. It's creating a blueprint for hydrogen-powered public transportation across South Korea and potentially beyond.

Liquid hydrogen technology offers higher energy density than compressed gas, making it more efficient for large-scale transportation needs. NK Tech CEO Cheon Young-soo emphasized the company's commitment to building safe, efficient infrastructure based on years of experience in hydrogen station construction and transportation. The company's selection validates the growing expertise of South Korea's domestic hydrogen industry.
