South Korea Launches AI and Drone Security Startup Program

South Korea just launched an ambitious plan to turn its security technology startups into global powerhouses while strengthening national defense at the same time.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups held its first task force meeting on July 29th in Seoul, bringing together six government agencies and multiple support organizations. Their mission is clear: help companies working on cutting-edge AI and drone security technology grow into world leaders.

This isn't just about military strength. The government wants to create an ecosystem where national security improvements drive industrial growth, creating jobs and new markets along the way.

The program involves heavy hitters from across government, including the Ministry of National Defense, the Financial Services Commission, and the newly formed Korea AeroSpace Administration. Support agencies like the Korea Venture Investment Corporation will help push policy forward and connect startups with resources.

Companies selected for the program will receive support at every stage of growth. That means funding for research and development, investment connections, opportunities to test their products, guaranteed government contracts, and help breaking into international markets.

The Ripple Effect

South Korea is betting that strengthening security capabilities can spark broader economic transformation. By investing in dual-use technologies like AI and drones, the country positions itself at the intersection of defense innovation and commercial opportunity.

The task force is also working on new legislation, including a special act to support these security innovation companies and amendments to national contracting laws. They're even planning to establish Korea Strategic Technology Partners, a specialized investment fund modeled after America's In-Q-Tel, which backs cutting-edge technology companies.

Park Yong-soon, director general for SME policy at the ministry, emphasized the dual benefits. "Fostering innovative corporations in new security is a new growth engine that supports both national security and the creation of new industries," he said.

The government plans to announce specific details soon, including which technology areas will be designated as strategic fields, the criteria companies must meet to qualify, and how the investment fund will operate. Selected companies will gain access to a complete support system spanning investment, product development, government purchasing, and international expansion.

South Korea joins a growing number of nations recognizing that tomorrow's security challenges require private sector innovation and speed, not just traditional defense contractors.
