South Korean School Celebrates 50 Years of Free Education

When Kim Jong-hee founded Bukil High School in 1976, he made an extraordinary commitment that no student would ever miss out on education because of poverty. Fifty years later, his vision has transformed 24,000 young lives.

On April 4, 2026, more than 1,300 students, alumni, and faculty gathered at the Cheonan campus to mark this milestone. Among them was Kim Seung-yeon, chairman of Hanwha Group and son of the founder, who served as the school's chairman for over three decades.

Before the ceremony began, Kim stood quietly at his father's statue, reflecting on half a century of impact. In the guestbook, he wrote about creating "a passionate future for Bukil for the next 100 years."

The elder Kim had experienced poverty firsthand as a child. That hardship became his motivation to offer unlimited scholarships, ensuring talented students could pursue their dreams regardless of family circumstances.

During Kim Seung-yeon's leadership from 1981 to 2014, Bukil expanded dramatically through investments in facilities and faculty. Today the school serves 1,697 students with 201 teachers, maintaining its reputation for academic excellence.

At the anniversary, attendees watched a documentary chronicling the school's journey and listened to orchestra performances. Students sang the school anthem alongside graduates who had walked the same halls decades earlier.

Kim Seung-yeon's speech captured what makes this story remarkable. "The noble flame created by the founder still burns strongly," he told current students, urging them to become leaders who would guide society into a new century.

The school's approach proves that when financial barriers disappear, talent flourishes. Bukil's 24,000 graduates have gone on to prominent positions across South Korea, each one a testament to the power of accessible education.
