South Padre Island Adds 16 EV Superchargers for Visitors

Electric vehicle owners planning a beach getaway just got a major convenience boost on South Padre Island.

The city is adding 16 universal EV superchargers at the Island Metro Multi-Modal Park and Ride facility on Padre Boulevard. These aren't your typical slow-charging stations—superchargers can power up vehicles significantly faster, cutting wait times and getting travelers back to vacation mode more quickly.

The timing couldn't be better. More electric vehicles are hitting Texas roads every year, and coastal destinations like South Padre Island need infrastructure to match. The centrally located charging hub will serve both locals and the steady stream of visitors who make the island a year-round destination.

Construction started June 1 and should wrap up in about eight weeks. The parking lot is staying open during the work, so nothing stops beachgoers from using the facility.

Transit Director Jesse Arriaga credits teamwork between city council members, the Texas Department of Transportation, Tesla, and transit staff for bringing the project to life. "This project will enable greater fundamental development and growth for the Island Metro, allowing it to better serve the community," Arriaga said.
