Southampton Couple Donates £6K After Life-Saving Care

When Kay Butterworth's heart began failing in 2022, she never imagined she'd one day be funding the unit that saved her life.

The Southampton woman experienced swollen ankles, water retention, and frightening breathlessness before being admitted to Southampton General Hospital in May 2023 with congestive heart failure. Dr. Paul Haydock, lead heart failure consultant cardiologist, quickly diagnosed that the left side of Kay's heart wasn't working properly while the right side was overcompensating.

After receiving a pacemaker in late 2024, Kay and her husband Adrian decided to say thank you in a meaningful way. As trustees of the Marden Charitable Trust, they donated £6,000 to Heartbeat, the cardiac charity supporting the hospital's heart failure unit.

"Treatment I received at the hospital, but particularly from Paul Haydock and his team, gave both me and my family the reassurance that I was in safe hands," Kay said. The donation will fund renovations to the very unit where she received care.

Adrian Butterworth explained that the donation perfectly aligned with their charitable mission. "Our aim is to give money to local organisations that do meaningful work, and we have a preference for charities that have human or nature interests," he said.

When someone's personal medical crisis becomes their inspiration to help others, something beautiful happens. The Butterworths could have simply expressed gratitude, but they chose to ensure future patients would receive the same excellent care.

Tanya Harder, community fundraising and marketing manager at Heartbeat, called the gift "even more special" knowing Kay personally benefited from their support. She emphasized that charitable donations make their entire mission possible.

The Butterworths plan to continue supporting Heartbeat, turning Kay's health scare into lasting hope for countless others facing similar heart challenges.
