Spacecraft Catches Interstellar Comet Racing Past Earth

A comet that traveled billions of years through the darkness of space just whizzed past Earth, and a European spacecraft managed to snap its portrait along the way.

The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, or JUICE, captured stunning images of Comet 3I/ATLAS last November as both objects crossed paths in our cosmic neighborhood. The photos reveal an almost egg-shaped visitor wrapped in a glowing cloud of gas around its rocky core.

This rare interstellar guest reached speeds of more than 150,000 miles per hour as it zoomed between Earth and Mars during its closest approach to the sun. Scientists first spotted the comet in July 2025, and its extraordinary speed and unusual trajectory immediately told them this was no ordinary space rock.

"It's like glimpsing a rifle bullet for a thousandth of a second," said David Jewitt, director of the Institute for Planets and Exoplanets at the University of California, Los Angeles. The comet has likely been traveling through interstellar space for billions of years, though no one knows where it came from or where it's heading next.

Despite its mysterious origins, the comet behaves just like any other comet scientists have studied. It's simply passing through from somewhere beyond our solar system, offering astronomers a precious window into the space between stars.

Only three interstellar objects have ever been discovered passing through our solar system, making every sighting an extraordinary event. Space agencies around the world scrambled to point their instruments at 3I/ATLAS, turning every available telescope and spacecraft toward this cosmic traveler.

Each observation adds another piece to the puzzle of what exists beyond our solar bubble. While the comet remains largely mysterious, every new image and measurement helps scientists understand the building blocks of other star systems and the vast expanses between them.

The European Space Agency confirmed that despite being a visitor from interstellar space, the comet's behavior matches what they'd expect from a normal comet. That consistency across cosmic distances suggests the same basic processes shape worlds and wanderers throughout the universe.
