Spain Hits Lowest Unemployment Since 2008 Financial Crisis

Spain just recorded its lowest unemployment numbers since before the 2008 financial crisis, with registered jobseekers falling to 2.29 million in June. It's a milestone that signals a dramatic turnaround for a country once devastated by economic collapse.

The drop of nearly 29,000 unemployed workers in just one month brings Spain below 2.3 million jobseekers for the first time since January 2008. Social Security membership simultaneously hit an all-time high of 22.47 million contributors, adding more than 600,000 workers over the past year.

Women are driving much of this success story. Female unemployment fell below 1.4 million for the first time since August 2008, with nearly 72,000 fewer women out of work compared to last year. The number of women contributing to Social Security reached 10.6 million, the highest ever recorded in Spain.

Young people are also finding their footing. Youth unemployment dropped to 159,800, the lowest figure in Spain's entire recorded history for this age group. Young women saw particularly strong gains, with 4,090 fewer unemployed compared to last year.

The tourism sector sparked much of June's improvement as the summer season kicked off. Services shed nearly 28,500 unemployed workers, while industry, construction, and agriculture also posted gains.

Foreign workers reached record employment levels too, with 3.45 million now contributing to Social Security. That's an increase of 350,000 foreign workers in just 12 months, and they now represent more than 15 percent of all contributors.

The Ripple Effect

Spain's job creation is making waves across Europe. The country generated 54.5 percent of all new jobs created in the European Union during this period, according to Social Security Minister Elma Saiz. That means one nation is providing more than half the employment growth for an entire continent of 27 countries.

Retail and hospitality led monthly growth with nearly 77,000 new workers combined. Over the full year, healthcare and social services added more than 78,000 jobs, while construction brought in 66,000. Self-employment also grew to 3.47 million workers, gaining 50,800 over the year.

One challenge remains visible in the data. People with no previous employment history increased by 4,298, suggesting first-time job seekers still face hurdles entering the workforce. But the overall trajectory points toward recovery that seemed impossible just years ago.

Spain has transformed from a cautionary tale of economic crisis into Europe's job creation powerhouse.
