Spanish Scientists Shrink Pancreatic Tumors in Mice

Scientists at Spain's National Cancer Research Centre have successfully wiped out pancreatic tumors in mice using a three-pronged treatment strategy that could transform how we fight one of the deadliest cancers.

The breakthrough addresses pancreatic cancer's biggest challenge: its lightning-fast ability to resist treatment. More than 10,300 people in Spain receive this devastating diagnosis each year, and fewer than 10 percent survive five years.

The research team combined three different weapons to attack the KRAS oncogene, a key driver of pancreatic tumors. They used an experimental KRAS inhibitor, a lung cancer drug already approved for patients, and a protein degrader that helps destroy cancer cells.

The results were remarkable. Tumors disappeared in three different animal models without causing significant side effects. Even better, the cancers didn't come back.

Traditional approaches fail because tumors quickly learn to work around single-drug treatments. By hitting three targets simultaneously along the same molecular pathway, the Spanish team prevented the cancer from finding an escape route.

The study, published in the scientific journal PNAS, offers new hope for designing combination therapies that could extend survival for patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, the most common form of pancreatic cancer.

The Bright Side

While the researchers emphasize they're not ready for human trials yet, this discovery charts a clear path forward. The combination therapy worked so well in animal models that it provides a solid blueprint for developing clinical trials.

Optimizing the treatment for human patients will take time and careful work. The research team acknowledges the process will be complex, requiring adjustments to dosing, timing, and drug combinations.

But after decades of limited progress against pancreatic cancer, scientists now have proof that outsmarting tumor resistance is possible. The three-drug approach demonstrates that strategic combination therapy can achieve what single treatments cannot: lasting remission without relapse.

This research represents more than just another lab finding. It's a roadmap that could guide the next generation of clinical trials and bring new options to patients facing one of medicine's toughest opponents.
