Spyro Returns in First New Game in Nearly 20 Years

After nearly two decades away from his own adventures, Spyro the Dragon is finally getting the comeback fans have been hoping for.

Announced at the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, Spyro: A Realm Beyond marks the first core Spyro game since the mid-2000s. Developer Toys for Bob, the team behind the beloved Spyro: Reignited Trilogy remaster and Crash Bandicoot 4, is bringing the plucky purple dragon back to life with an all-new adventure set to launch in spring 2027.

The game promises to capture what made the original trilogy special while expanding the experience in meaningful ways. Studio head Paul Yan says the team focused on "the fluidity of movement" and "zen-like momentum" that defined classic Spyro gameplay.

But this time, players will experience something new: seamless transitions between ground exploration and aerial dragon flight. The developers designed entire worlds around this freedom of movement, creating environments that feel natural whether you're racing across valleys or soaring through the skies.

For Toys for Bob, this project represents a return to their creative roots. After the Microsoft-Activision merger, the studio spent time supporting games like Overwatch 2 and Call of Duty. While that work expanded their skills, the team was eager to create their own game again.
