St. John Fisher Tennis Makes History With First NCAA Bid

The St. John Fisher Cardinals tennis team rewrote their record books on Saturday, capturing their first conference championship in program history and earning a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Cardinals defeated Alfred University 4-3 in a nail-biting final at the A. Copi Tennis & Sports Center in Augusta, Maine.

The win capped an extraordinary season for the Rochester-based team. With 12 victories, the Cardinals matched their best performance in nearly 20 years and entered the championship match riding an 11-game winning streak.

Junior Tyler Hernandez led the charge, earning Tournament MVP honors after sweeping both his matches. In the championship final, he defeated Alfred's Ricardo Alvarez 6-3, 7-6 in a tense first singles match that set the tone for his team.

The Cardinals grabbed an early advantage by winning the doubles point. Senior Sean Brown teamed with freshman Finn Whitaker for a 6-3 victory in second doubles, while freshmen Matthew Lincoln and Sebastian Dix dominated third doubles 6-1.

Alfred fought back hard in singles play, taking a 3-2 lead with victories in the second, third, and fourth singles matches. The Saxons appeared poised to claim their first championship, having lost to St. John Fisher twice already this season.

But Brown and sophomore Charlie Roberts had other plans. Brown cruised to a straight-sets victory in fifth singles, leveling the match at 3-3 and leaving everything on Roberts' shoulders.

Roberts faced the ultimate pressure moment in sixth singles. After dropping the first set 6-2 to Josh Erickson, he rallied to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-2, clinching the historic championship for his team.
