Stars Unite for Cancer-Free John Farnham Tribute Concert
After beating cancer, beloved Australian music legend John Farnham will be honored by Celine Dion, Keith Urban, and other global stars in a September concert raising funds for head and neck cancer care. Though Farnham can't perform anymore due to cancer surgeries, his impact inspires artists worldwide to celebrate his legacy.
When one of Australia's most beloved voices announced he couldn't sing on stage again, music legends from around the world stepped up to sing for him instead.
John Farnham, 76, will be honored at "The Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend" on September 20 at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena. Celine Dion, Keith Urban, Hugh Jackman, Jimmy Barnes, Tina Arena, Jessica Mauboy, and Richard Marx are among the stars performing to celebrate the Australian icon who touched millions with his music.
Farnham was diagnosed with mouth cancer in 2022 and underwent extensive facial surgeries. In August 2023, he announced he was cancer free. While he told the Herald Sun that performing is "just not possible" for him now, his spirit remains strong.
The tribute concert will raise funds for Head and Neck Cancer Australia, the service that supported Farnham through his battle. "This night is about giving something back and supporting a cause that means a great deal to me," Farnham said in a statement.
Why This Inspires
The response from fellow artists reveals just how deeply Farnham impacted the music world. Celine Dion called him "truly one of the great voices of the world" and recalled "such beautiful memories" of sharing the stage with him. She praised his generosity, humor, and incredible voice "that fills your heart the moment you hear it."
Dion and Jackman will perform from overseas via satellite, proving that distance is no barrier when honoring a true legend. Local Australian stars like Kate Ceberano, Human Nature, and Ross Wilson will take the stage in person.
Farnham's 1986 album "Whispering Jack" sold more than 1.6 million copies, making it one of Australia's most successful records ever. He was named Australian of the Year in 1987 and has won 21 ARIA awards across his decades-long career. His last public performance was at Sydney's Fire Fight fundraising concert in February 2020.
In 2024, Farnham released his memoir "The Voice Inside," sharing both the triumphs and struggles of his remarkable journey. Now, as he faces a future without performing, the music community is showing him he'll never sing alone.
Tickets go on sale June 2.
