Starving Stray Becomes Hero, Saves 13 in Venezuela Quake

When two massive earthquakes hit Venezuela within hours of each other, an eight-year-old Border Collie named Tsunami became the hope buried survivors desperately needed.

The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes killed over 1,700 people and left thousands trapped beneath collapsed buildings. As rescue teams raced against time, Tsunami worked tirelessly through the rubble, using his extraordinary sense of smell to locate signs of life where human eyes saw only devastation.

Among the 13 people he helped rescue was a 60-year-old man who had been buried alive for six days. Thanks to Tsunami's persistent searching, rescue workers reached him just in time.

But Tsunami's story of saving lives began with someone saving his. Years earlier, he was starving and abandoned on the streets of Caracas, suffering from severe abuse and malnutrition with no future in sight.

Anita Vidal found him and gave him the second chance that would change everything. She nursed him back to health, and rescue specialist Jorge Beens soon recognized something special in the recovering dog.

Beens trained Tsunami with Venezuela's K-SAR ECID disaster canine unit, where his intelligence and determination shined. Over the years, he served in earthquake, flood, and landslide missions across multiple countries, becoming one of the region's most reliable search and rescue dogs.
